Blog Post #4
The grade standard that I chose was 5th grade and I chose standard number 5. I would describe standard number 5 as teaching students to navigate the Internet and sharing their thoughts with others safely through supervision. I feel unprepared to teach this, as I do not know much about scientific blogs, and am unsure if apps like Blogger is what they mean by the standard. However, I believe that with work and research I will be able to teach children to share their ideas online.
I selected the standards for 4th grade math on the CPALMs website, and the lesson plan I really enjoyed was the lesson "Making Cents of Taxes." This plan uses complex addition and multiplication tools with decimal numbers to learn how to pay taxes. I really enjoy the lesson because it hits three standards in one and it teaches an important life skill, like figuring out bills and taxes, at a young age. I think that CPALMs is a very important resource for teachers when crafting lesson plans that hit standards, as the lesson plans and ideas that they show are engaging as well as hitting standards.
It is extremely important to be able to research for ideas and activities for the classroom as a teacher. We did not go over the unit about searching skills in class because of the hurricane, but I believe an important skill to do is research lesson plans like CPALMs to make teaching to the common core simpler. Over summer, I researched a lot of science experiments on Pinterest for my kids at summer camp. I also think researching on YouTube is helpful to find videos that are relevant to the lesson that keeps the students engaged in presentations.
The only real artificial intelligence that is pertinent to education is Chat GPT. I feel that Chat GPT should be present in the classroom as a stepping stone, such as helping brainstorm ideas for an essay or project. I feel that telling a student that artificial intelligence is bad and does not belong in the classroom will make children want to use it to cheat more because it is forbidden. Teaching children to use it as an effective guide will give them tools to use it correctly and maybe inspire future scientists that develop the future of artificial intelligence.
